At the turn of the century, there were thousands of stock exchanges. There are now approximately 200 stock exchanges which match buyers and sellers of shares and distribute announcements. Technology advances mean that this global community function could be performed by a single computer. Over the last decade, stock exchanges have created value with rising transaction volumes and cost cutting. Now, the industry is consolidating by merger and acquisition. Will stock exchange consolidation just aggregate Web 1.0 obsolescence or provide new features for the equity market?
